Trezor — Get started

A short, secure guide to setting up your Trezor hardware wallet and protecting your crypto.

Why a hardware wallet?

A hardware wallet stores your private keys offline in a dedicated device. This isolates your keys from malware and phishing attacks that target computers and browsers, giving you a secure way to sign transactions while keeping recovery under your control.

1

Check package & contents

Make sure the tamper-evident packaging is intact. Inside you should find the Trezor device, USB cable, recovery card(s), and quick-start guide. If anything looks tampered with, contact support — do not proceed.

2

Install Trezor Suite

Open your browser and visit the official Trezor Suite download page (use a trusted device). Install the desktop or web Suite — this is the official interface used to initialize and manage your wallet.

3

Connect & initialize

Connect your Trezor to your computer with the included cable. Follow on-screen instructions to create a new wallet. The device will generate a recovery seed — a list of 12 to 24 words — that is the only backup of your wallet.

4

Write down your recovery seed

Write each word in order on the supplied recovery card. Do this offline and never store the seed digitally (no photos, no cloud storage, no text notes). Consider multiple physical copies stored in separate secure locations.

5

Set a PIN and optional passphrase

Set a device PIN to protect against physical theft. Advanced users can also enable a passphrase — this acts as a 25th word and can create hidden wallets. Use a strong passphrase you will remember; losing it means losing access.

6

Receive and verify

To receive funds, use the address shown in Trezor Suite and confirm the address on the device screen. Always verify the first few and last few characters on the hardware display before sharing an address.

Security best practices

  • Never share your recovery seed. Anyone with the seed can control your funds.
  • Keep the recovery seed offline and in multiple secure places.
  • Only download firmware and Trezor Suite from the official site.
  • Be wary of phishing — bookmark trezor.io/start and use it as your trusted entry point.

Troubleshooting

If your device does not power on, try a different USB port or cable. If Suite doesn't detect the device, ensure browser permissions are enabled and you have the latest firmware. For lost or damaged devices, your recovery seed restores your funds; you can recover using another compatible Trezor or other BIP39-compatible wallet.

Important: The recovery seed is your responsibility. Trezor (the company) cannot recover or access your seed for you. Keep it private and safe.

Quick FAQ

Q: Can I use Trezor on multiple computers?
A: Yes — your device works with any computer running Trezor Suite or supported web wallets. Your private keys remain on the device.
Q: What if I lose my recovery seed?
A: Without your recovery seed (or passphrase), you cannot restore your wallet. Treat the seed as the key to your funds.
